BRONZE STATUETTE RIDER ON HORSE - DIOSCURI

The original dated 550 B.C. is in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and represent one of the Dioscuri brothers. Dioscuri, also called (in French) Castor and Polydeuces and (in Latin) Castor and Pollux, (Dioscuri from Greek Dioskouroi, “Sons of Zeus”), in Greek and Roman mythology, twin deities who succoured shipwrecked sailors and received sacrifices for favourable winds. The Dioskouroi were worshipped by the Greeks and Romans alike. There were temples to the twins in Athens, such as the Anakeion, and Rome, as well as shrines in many other locations in the ancient world.(019)
