A sibyl is a woman in antiquity who was believed to have powers of prophecy or divination. Sibyls were female prophets in Greek and Roman mythology. Their prophecies were inspired by Apollo or other gods and appeared as riddles to be interpreted by priests. There were usually accepted as 10 sibyls, credited to different parts of the ancient world, such as Babylonia, Egypt, Greece, and Italy.

Synonyms for sibyl include seer, prophetess, oracle, soothsayer, witch, fortune-teller, and sorceress. One of the most famous sibyls was the Cumaean Sibyl, who guided Aeneas through the underworld. The name sibyl comes from the Greek word "sibulla", which means prophetess.
