The shashka has its origin in the peoples of the Caucasus Mountains in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. They sought them out on horseback fearing warriors of their own kind, and the shashka contributed significantly to their tactical successes.

In the Russian Empire, the shashka was the weapon of choice of the Cossacks. These were strictly democratically organized warriors, the most wanted mercenaries in Eastern Europe.
