Well, though it is still a task of pure misery however long you’re on the clock, the magical Z-Lion sheet of diamonds really helped cut down on the labor. It is essentially a $$$ sheet of magic super-sandpaper, and there’s no telling how many fastballs that dude’s got in him before he’s lost a step. I was able to beat up a dozen or so bench stones and a similar number of slurry stones, including some Arks, before the 12x18cm sheet seemed to notably slow (but still it cuts!)
Here’s a 2x6x0.9″ Dan’s Black Arkansas Stone, with one of its 2×6″ surfaces shaped with this tool to a 25’Ø primary axis ellipse, with a 6.5’Ø secondary axis.
It is as good a finishing stone, in my opinion, as can be had.
I prefer my black Ark with a bit of diffuse surface, so that’s how it was finished; it is 400 JIS as the last sandpaper used, and I don’t want it any finer than that or I can’t feel the stone working, and the work of the stone communicating to my hands is a huge part of honing. You may prefer a glassier finish. There’s no right or wrong answer.
