Large 25\" Baule FIgure Second half 20th Century Africa Ivory Coast Cote d\'IvoireLarge 25\" Baule FIgure Second half 20th Century Africa Ivory Coast Cote d\'Ivoire, nice reddish patina.This is a lovely young female figure of the Baoule or Baule culture from the Ivory Coast, with beautifully stylized hairstyle, and symmetrical scarification on the face and body. This is a sculpture from the second half of the 20th century.
These type of figures play and important role in Baoulé culture is the blolo bla and blolo bian spirit spouse figures. These sculptures are private objects made for an individual to represent their spirit spouse. Each person has a spirit spouse from the other world, which they were married to before they were born into this world. People make offerings of food and money to their spirit spouse figures to keep them happy because they can influence their relationship with their earthly spouse or other earthly relationships and personal endeavors.Measurements:25 x 4 1/4 x 4 1/2
