A stunning hand carved hand painted Balinese style suar wood sculpture of a Lion or SINGA measuring 24 cm x 16.5 cm (9.5 x 6.5 in.) fresh from an old estate collection and said to have been collected sometime in the mid 20th century in Bali, Indonesia. Singa sculpture is in near fine condition though bearing a check in the wood across one flank of the piece as well as various rubbings and scrapes and the loss of the point of one lower rear canine. Carved entirely from one piece of suar wood and weighing 2 lbs.

Singa is an apotropaic figure from the mythology of the Batak people of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The singa represents a benevolent and protective power. The singa is described as \"part human, part water buffalo, and part crocodile or lizard\". It is variedly represented as here, but always with big bulging eyes, and lion like features among various other attributes. It is often represented only with its head, but sometimes it may also be represented full body as in our sculpture. Other figures - such as other protective deity or ancestral figures - may also be represented standing or sitting on top of the head of the singa, though such is not represented in the present sculpture.

Collected by an ancestor to the estate sometime in the mid 20th century in Bali, Indonesia. EtymologyThe word singa is derived from the Sanskrit singa, \"lion\". The Batak term singa has a predominantly magical - rather than zoological - meaning, so it does not symbolize a lion, but Nāga or Boru Saniang Naga, the primeval water serpent from the Hindu-Buddhist mythology.
