Queen Nefertiti (1370-1330 B.C.) is considered to be the most beautiful woman of the ancient world. Her only rival is Helen of Troy, who described in Greek myth and in Homer\'s epic poem, The Iliad, may have been a real person.
Nefertiti was the official royal wife of Pharaoh Akhenaten--one of many royal wives, but certainly the most preferred and most beloved wife of the pharaoh. Her name means \"the perfectly beautiful woman has come.\"
Nefertiti\'s Portrait Bust was excavated in 1912 at the ancient site of Tell el-Amarna (royal capital city of Pharaoh Akhenaten) in house P47.2 Room 19. This bust, which is attributed to the sculptor Tuthmose was found in his workshop.German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt discovered the Bust of Nefertiti on the ground along with the Bust of Akhenaten (which was desecrated by iconoclasts after the pharaoh died).
Images of Nefertiti\'s Portrait Bust were soon published and it became instantly admired and world famous--so that it has been one of the most frequently reproduced works of ancient Egyptian sculpture. As to purpose, it is uncertain whether the Bust of Nefertiti from Tell el-Amarna was intended as a finished portrait or as a model for a more developed portrait bust.
There are not many portrait busts which survive from ancient Egypt because one must remember that nearly all sculpture created during the many centuries of the Old Kingdom, Middle Kingdom, and New Kingdom served ritual-magical purposes: The ancient Egyptians believed that the soul can inhabit statues or be preserved in sculpted likenesses of deceased personages (in case the mummy sustained destruction through accident or vandalism). There are some \"reserve heads\" from the Old Kingdom and a famous painted limestone Portrait Bust of Prince Ankh-haf (ca. 2520-2494 B.C.) but generally speaking the portrait bust was not a preferred method of representing a living or a deceased personage because it only showed a three-quarter view of the person--not the entire image of the person. Ancient Egyptian portrait busts are typically unfinished and by no means were considered works of art--but were made to serve magic, or the cult of ancestor worship.
By contrast, the genre of the portrait bust in ancient Rome was extremely popular among the Roman aristocracy (Senators, wealthy persons, and emperors) as a means of memorializing a specific individual in a purely secular way--and yet this centuries\' long tradition in ancient Roman sculpture also had a cultic origin--in the carrying of images of the deceased during funeral processions and in the worship of ancestors whose individualized portrait busts would be placed on shrines within Roman houses.
Of all the portrait busts excavated from ancient Egypt, the Bust of Queen Nefertiti is certainly the most famous and most researched.
This particular Summit Collection reproduction is faithful to the beauty of the Berlin bust and is amazingly detailed, especially in the hand painted forms of the collar necklace which are intended to represent the semi-precious stones used in royal jewelry, turquoise carnelian and lapis lazuli. This reproduction also evokes the naturalism of the human portrait. The naturalistic style of the Nefertiti Bust is in sharp contrast to the more rigidgeometrical design of traditional sculpture from ancient Egypt.Ludwig Borchardt also discovered numerous other busts in the same room, including those of royal children and the desecrated bust of Pharaoh Akhenaten. This pharaoh of the 18th Dynasty is also known as \"the heretic pharaoh\" because he abandoned the centuries-old polytheism of Egypt in order to worship one god--the \"Aten\" (solar disc). Because Akhenaten dictated this religious revolution in Egypt, he became despised by the powerful priesthood of Thebes, whose prestige and wealth were now greatly diminished. After Akhenaten died, the Theban priesthood revived worship of the many gods and ordered Pharaoh Akhenaten\'s images to be desecrated and destroyed. Nefertiti may have continued to rule as Queen Nefer-neferu-aten for some years afterwards but historians are not certain when she died or where she was buried. Her most famous royal child was Tut-ankh-amun best known to history as \"the boy King\" and popularly known as \"King Tut.\"THIS QUEEN NEFERTITI PORTAIT BUST
