Leadville, Colorado has a rich and storied history as a mining town in the American West. Here is a summary of the key events and developments:Leadville was first settled in 1860 when prospector Abe Lee discovered placer gold in the nearby California Gulch.
This sparked a gold rush that brought around 10,000 miners to the area. However, the real boom came in 1878 with the discovery of extensive silver deposits, which led to Leadville's population growing to between 25,000 and 40,000 by 1880.During this silver boom, Leadville became home to some of the West's most famous characters, including silver magnates Horace and "Baby Doe" Tabor, outlaw Doc Holliday, and the "Unsinkable" Molly Brown.
The railroads also played a vital role, with former president Ulysses S. Grant riding the inaugural train into Leadville in 1880.The silver boom came to an end in 1893 when the Sherman Silver Purchase Act was repealed, causing a silver panic that led to the closure of the Tabors' Matchless Mine and the loss of around 90% of Leadville's jobs. However, the town was revitalized in the early 20th century when the value of zinc was discovered, and many mines that had been discarding zinc carbonate as waste began producing it.Today, Leadville is a National Historic Landmark with 67 mines in the 20 square mile mining district and 70 square blocks of original Victorian architecture. It is a major heritage tourism destination, with more museums than any other city in Colorado. The town's rich history and colorful characters continue to captivate visitors.
