Sekhmet WithAnubis AndHathor

Sekhmetwas the daughter of thesun god,Ra, and was among the more important of thegoddesseswho acted as the vengeful manifestation ofRa'spower, the Eye ofRa.Sekhmetwas said to breathe fire, and the hot winds of the desert were likened to her breath. She was also believed to cause plagues (which were called as her servants or messengers) although she was also called upon to ward off disease.In a myth about the end ofRa'srule on the earth,Rasends thegoddessHathor, in the form ofSekhmet, to destroy mortals who conspired against him. In other versions of this story,Sekhmetgrew angered at the deception and leftEgypt, diminishing the power of thesun. This threatened the power and security of the world—thus, she was persuaded by thegodThoth to return and restore thesunto its full glory. Her mythical portrayal was among the more important of thegoddesseswho acted as the vengeful manifestation ofRa'spower, the Eye ofRa. Her attributes and her iconography sometimes makes it difficult to differentiateSekhmetfrom other felinegoddesses– mainlyBastet.Sekhmetwas considered the wife of thegod Ptahand mother of his sonNefertum. More temples were dedicated to her than to any othergoddess; her most prominent temple was Dendera in UpperEgypt. She was also worshipped in the temples of her male consorts. TheEgyptiansconnected her with foreign lands such as Nubia and Canaan and their valuable goods, such as incense and semiprecious stones, and some of the peoples in those lands adopted her worship. InEgypt, she was one of thedeitiescommonly invoked in private prayers and votive offerings, particularly by women desiring children. During the New Kingdom( 1550–1070 BC),goddessessuch as Mut andIsisencroached onHathor'sposition in royal ideology, but she remained one of the most widely worshippeddeities. After the end of the New Kingdom,Hathorwas increasingly overshadowed byIsis, but she continued to be venerated until the extinction ofancient Egyptianreligion in the early centuries AD.
