• For sale is a real-photo postcard that was taken in Evansville, Indiana, during the 1937 Ohio River flood. It shows the rising floodwaters at Riverside from Governor St. Looking East. It is No. 29 in a series of flood pictures taken by local photographer Ed Rech. The flood of 1937 took place in late January and February 1937. With damage stretching from Pittsburgh to Cairo, Illinois, 1 million were left homeless, with 385 dead and property losses reaching $500 million. In Evansville, the river rose to a record 53.74 feet, which was 19 feet above flood stage, and sent water over the six-month-old riverfront plaza. Martial law was declared on Jan. 24 and 4,000 WPA workers were sent to the city.
