Detailed ,uncommon ,INTRICATE, SOLID and beautiful fulgurite specimen found in Polk County, Florida. OUTSTANDING EDUCATIONAL SPECIMEN WITH GLASS LINED CAVITY!!!This specimen actually has THREE glass lined openings!!
Photos 15-18 demonstrate some degree of transillumination when the specimen is held to a desk lamp.Photos 6-13 show the glass lined openings.
COOL specimen!!!.Fulgurites area typeof lechatelierite (amorphousmineraloid or silica glass) .These unusual and fascinating objects form when lightning strikes the earth. The heat created by the massive electrical jolt ( 53,450 degreesFahrenheit!!!) causes a localized melting and fusion of the sand and /or rock into tubes or casts.. Sand is made of silicon dioxide /quartz ( which is what glass is made from!). The heat can be so extreme that it melts and vaporizes the sand into tube-like structure . This along with expansion of the air caused by the heat, when conditions are just right, can result in a hollow glass lined tube. Hence, a fulgurite is actually a cast/image/imprint of a lightning bolt left within the sand or earth !!! These treasures are most frequently found in desert areas and sandy beaches where lightning strikes are frequent. Many specimens come from Morocco and the African deserts where nomads spend their lives seeking these highly sought after specimens. Rarely, fulgurites can be many feet long, They are however, VERY FRAGILE. When extracted from the ground they often break. Rapid cooling also can result in natural fracturing of the tubes.. Fulgurites are , therefore, usually small, less than a few inches inlength.
Aside from their beauty ,these are great educational specimens, cabinet specimens or conversation pieces!
