[Lincoln Assassination] William Seward Signs Land Document As New York Governor:
$495.00

CRUMHORN MOUNTAIN is a small mountain chain located in Central New York. On May 4th, 1842, Governor WILLIAM SEWARD signed a letters patent granting WILLIAM CROUCH 50 acres of land in the Crumhorn Mountain Track. 15 ½ x 19 ¾ signed by Seward and Archibald Campbell, deputy secretary of state. In small part, “...We have released and do by these presents release unto William Crouch all such interest n the land herein after described as we may have acquired by reason that the said William Crouch is obliged to deduce his title to the said land through Thomas Crouch an alien not authorized by law to hold and convey lands...”

SEWARD became more important to the United States as he advanced in his profession. He served as governor for two terms, primarily pursuing prison reform, universal education and internal improvements. He decided not to run for re-election and returned to his law practice. His most notable case was the defense of William Freeman, a mentally ill black man accused of murdering four people. The case drew the attention of the entire nation. Freeman was found guilty but Seward won a stay of execution and a new trial. While awaiting a court case, Freeman died.

In 1849, Seward was elected to the United States Senate. President Abraham Lincoln appointed Seward Secretary of State. Seward carefully managed international affairs during the Civil War and negotiated the 1867 purchase of Alaska. When Lincoln was shot, Lewis Powell, a Confederate soldier, attempted to assassinate Seward. Although brutally attacked in his bed, Seward survived the attack.

Toning and folds. A few folds splits reinforced with archival tape.
