Antique Railroad Train Photo ROCKINGHAM Bulldog Dog in Window Vernacular RPPC: $199.00
Wonderful early vernacular photograph of a family dog posed in the window of a railroad car named “ROCKINGHAM.”A bulldog-type dog sits prominently in the open window of the railway car, looking directly toward the photographer. Below the window, ROCKINGHAM is clearly visible on the side of the car. What makes the photograph especially charming is the original handwritten inscription on the reverse:“Jack ‘Our Dog’ with whom Fred learned to walk.”This transforms the image from simply an early railroad/dog photograph into a remarkably personal piece of everyday history. Jack was evidently an important family dog—remembered specifically as the companion with whom a child named Fred learned to walk.Likely early 20th century, approximately 1905–1920. Further research may identify the railroad or particular car represented by the name ROCKINGHAM.CONDITION: Please examine all photographs carefully. There is a large, prominent vertical crease running nearly the entire height of the photograph through the center, with cracking/separation along portions of the crease. Additional edge and corner wear, surface marks, age toning and handling wear are present. This is a heavily creased original photograph and is priced accordingly. Despite the damage, the principal image of the dog remains remarkably strong and the ROCKINGHAM lettering is visible. An unusual combination of early railroad history, canine photography, vernacular Americana and documented family history.Original vintage photograph — not a modern reproduction.
