Antique Victorian Tunbridge Ware Sewing Parquetry Box circa 1850 For Sale

An exceptional, authentic mid-19th-century English Victorian parquetry sewing or work box (circa 1830–1860). This piece beautifully demonstrates the high craftsmanship of British specimen woodwork from the Tunbridge Ware era, featuring a striking geometric optical illusion pattern. The lid showcases an exquisitely executed, isometric "tumbling blocks" (or perspective cubes) mosaic design. It uses a variety of natural, un-dyed domestic and exotic specimen wood veneers to create a deep 3D effect. The top is framed by a traditional, intricate tessellated dog-tooth (Vandyke) geometric border. The front fascia features its original diamond-shaped bone or ivory escutcheon surrounding the keyhole. The lid opens on original brass hinges to reveal its original pink paper-lined interior. It retains its rare, original top multi-compartment tray designed for sewing tools, thread spools, or jewelry storage, leaving a spacious deeper open well beneath. The underside of the box still features its original green wool baize (felt) base, which shows authentic, age-appropriate fading to a beautiful tan color along the borders.Condition Excellent antique condition. The parquetry veneer is stable, tight, and retains a gorgeous mellowed satin patina. Light surface wear consistent with a piece of this age.Interior: Good structural condition.
