Franklin Foster Flint, a native of Walpole, New Hampshire was a noted frontier officer before the War commanding US Army forces on the Red River and in Texas, and the Bridgers Pass Expedition in the Rocky Mountains. After the Civil War Colonel Flint commanded the 4th US Infantry and was Commanding Officer of Fort Laramie from 1869-1871 where he befriended Oglala Sioux Chief Red Cloud (Ref Fort Laramie and the US Army on the High Plains).An Original US Army Pay Certificate for Lt Colonel Flint, signed at Tallahassee, Florida by Flint as Lt Colonel 7th US Infantry, Feb 14, 1866. The 11 x 17\" ptd/ink Certificate, has edge cuts, archival repairs on reverse, age stains, Overall VG. During the Civil War Colonel Flint commanded US Army units at the bloody battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga and Valverde, New Mexico, and was awarded the rank of Brevet Brigadier General. . Colonel Flint retired from the Army in 1882 and served as Mayor of Highland Park, Illinois
