Large Antique Early Faience Beer Stein/Pitcher Old Lady France Desvres c.1700s

Description:

This large pouring stein/pitcher is made in the form of an old lady sitting on a grassy mold. The hinge lidded drinking and pouring vessels are generally called \"steins\" in the US, with a specifying addition like \"beer stein\", \"serving stein\" or \"pitcher\". When these vessels made in a form of a person, subject or animal, the usually called \"character\" or \"figural\" steins.

It is made from clay (earthenware) and glazed with white tin glaze - this material is called \"faience\" in many languages. It was decorated by one of the factory decorators who painted the stein in bright colors and floral elements. The paint is fired into the glaze.

The lid is pewter with the specific non-German hinge and scallop-shape thumblift. This type of pewter mounts is common with French or Belgium makers. I am not an expert in French or Belgium faience but from what I read, this vessel is French made in the North of France in Desvres or Lille in the mid- to late-1700s. It\'s usually called \"Jacqueline jug\" in Europe. There are some marks on the bottom that I was not able to decipher.

The stein/pitcher is in a very good condition with some minor glaze flakes and some old repair to the lid. The body has no lines, breaks or major chips.

It is quite large and heavy - 12\" tall to the top of the thumblift, 1.5 L capacity.

Condition: Body has some minor glaze flakes, otherwise excellent, lid has an old repair. Year: late 1700s Country: France Height: 12 in   Materials: Faience
