Malachite is a basic copper carbonate hydroxide [Cu₂CO₃(OH)₂], typically forming through the alteration of primary copper sulfides such as chalcopyrite or bornite. Its distinctive green hues and concentric banding are the result of rhythmic deposition from copper-rich solutions under oxidising conditions. Botryoidal malachite, like this piece, forms when fibrous crystals radiate inward from numerous points on a cavity surface, producing the characteristic grape-like shapes prized by collectors and lapidarists alike.

This specimen originates from Rum Jungle, near Batchelor in the Northern Territory of Australia—an area long associated with copper, lead, and uranium mineralization. The locality is known for producing attractive secondary copper minerals, including malachite and azurite, formed in the oxidised zones of ancient ore deposits. The specimen’s robust mass and rich colour exemplify the quality of material unearthed during early collecting and mining activities in the region.
