The Xi'an Incident, also known as the Sian Incident or Xi'an Mutiny, occurred in 1936 in Xi'an, China. It was a pivotal event during the Chinese Civil War between the Nationalist Kuomintang (KMT) government led by Chiang Kai-shek and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).
During the incident, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek was detained by his own subordinates, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, who were regional warlords and military leaders. The main reason for the detention was Chiang's reluctance to confront the Japanese invasion and his focus on suppressing the Chinese Communist forces instead.
Under house arrest in Xi'an, Chiang was forced to negotiate with the CCP representatives, including Zhou Enlai. The result of the negotiations was the formation of a temporary united front between the KMT and CCP against Japanese aggression. Chiang was released, and the two parties joined forces to resist the common enemy, Japan, during the Second Sino-Japanese War.
The Xi'an Incident had a significant impact on Chinese history, as it temporarily halted the civil war between the Nationalists and Communists and allowed them to unite against the greater threat of Japanese aggression.
