Vintage 1970’s Pacific Island Hand Carved Wood Wooden Log Slit Drum 20.5” For Sale

We are delighted to offer this rare vintage hand carved slit drum from the Pacific Islands, circa 1970. Known as a Pate and as a Tokere, it is from the split, or slit drum family. This slit drum, sometimes called a log drum, is from Solomon Island in the South Pacific. It is carved from Rosewood, a popular choice of wood on Solomon. It is made by cutting a hardwood branch or tree trunk and removing the bark. The abalone inlay on the rim is very beautifully designed and in great condition. The body of this drum is quite dense and features a carved fish on either side. Striking different parts of it produces uniquely distinct sounds. The drum measures approximately 20.5” long x 5.5” high, and weighs approximately 5.75 lbs. It is gently used with minimal wear.
