Presented is a beautiful Japanese woodblock print created by the most famous artist, Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), and published in 1830-1832 and reprinted in 1970s using the same traditional woodblock technique..
The print is titled "At Sea off Kazusa Province" (Kazusa no kairo). It is No. 30 in the series "Thirty-six Views of Mt.Fuji"( Fugaku sanju rokkei) (1830-1832).
Kazusa Province refers to what is now the central and southern region of Chiba Prefecture. During the Edo period, this coastal area thrived thanks to bustling maritime trade. At the center of the image, we see two Kisarazu-bune, a cargo ship that once sailed between Edo (modern-day Tokyo) and Kisarazu, transporting rice and goods. These vessels were the backbone of transport across Edo Bay, and their distinctive shape earned them the nickname Godairiki (“Five Great Powers”).
If you look closely, and you’ll spot three men peeking out from small windows along the hull, likely passengers catching a glimpse of the sea. The curved horizon line gives a sense of the ocean’s vastness, while the billowing sail, taut rigging, and hull form a bold triangular frame. Nestled within that triangle, like a treasure island, is a tiny Mount Fuji rising in the distance
The print was made using the traditional Japanese woodblock technique. It was re-cut and reprinted by Kato Print Institute publisher's house. The Instutute has not produced works since Kato Junzo's death (1976).
