Former Colt Studio Group model and adult film actor Mickey Squires (born Richard Bernstein) became an iconic figure in queer visual culture during the 1970s and 1980s. His robust physique helped popularize the "muscle daddy" aesthetics of that era. Under the direction of founder and legendary photographer Jim French, Colt Studio Group completely revolutionized gay male imagery. The studio led the transition away from the lean, mustachioed "Castro Clone" look toward a hyper-masculine, rugged, and muscular "beefy muscle daddy" aesthetic. He quickly became the blueprint for this new wave of rugged masculinity, frequently styled in blue-collar aesthetics, uniforms, and denim. He appeared on approximately 20 adult magazine covers (including Mandate and Zipper) and starred in feature films of the era.
