Zatanna Zatara (Zatanna) is a fictional magician appearing in DC Comics first appearing in Hawkman #4 (November 1964). Zatanna is the daughter of magician Giovanni "John" Zatara (Homo magi) and Sindella (Atlantean). The homo magi race (paternal) is/was a unique subset of humanity endowed with innate magical abilities and the Atlantean (maternal) blood connects her to the demigod Arion, a revered figure in ancient Atlantean history and the Sorcerer Supreme of ancient Atlantis. Furthermore, Zatanna's paternal line makes her a descendant of Leonardo da Vinci with blood relations to Nostradamus, Alessandro Cagliostro, Nicholas Flamel, and Evan Fulcanelli. She is very well known for her outfit, which consists of the magic hat, magician coat and undershirt, sleeve-less pants, fishnet nylons, and black high-heeled shoes (or high-heeled boots and/or purple tights). Zatanna's double magic based heritage grants her those inherent magical abilities and a profound command over mystical and cosmic forces believed to originate from the ancient depths of the universe. To completely focus on a particular spell or series of spells, Zatanna employs a unique method of spell-casting known as "Logomancy," (ie.. speaking backwards to invoke mystic effects as a means of concentration, a form used by her father (Zatara). This intense technique enables her to seemingly seamlessly perform a wide range of magical effects: teleportation, healing, manipulation of others' minds, and many more. Her proficiency abounds in other conventionally 'cast' forms of magic such as forms of black magic, tarot reading for insight or divination and she may use mystical objects derived from her parent's collections of mystic artifacts. Aside from magic, Zatanna is recognized for her exceptional skills as a professional & extremely talented illusionist, showgirl, and stage magician; she captivates audiences with her mesmerizing performances with both stage and actual magic.Wherein, She has honed her skills in sleight of hand and invented variations of card tricks and is adept at escape artistry, capable of freeing herself from straitjackets underwater or between magic show acts. In addition to her stage persona, Zatanna assumes the mantle of a mystic superhero, having received combat training from her father and is skilled in hand-to-hand combat. In this she wholeheartedly dedicated herself to the quest of thwarting malevolent forces. Zatanna starred in a special solo one-shot (1987) exploring her mother Sindella's background and battling the villainous sorceress Allura. In "Zatanna: Come Together" (her first solo limited series) she summons her mother's spirit and battles Tannarak (sorcerer) and Xaos (demon). In 2003, "Zatanna: Everyday Magic" (another one-shot) she fights Nimue Ravensong, a magic-user jealous of Zatanna's ability to use magic naturally and without committing sacrifices A four-issue Zatanna limited series (2005) was published as part of Grant Morrison's Seven Soldiers event. Zatanna received her own solo series (Paul Dini & Stéphane Roux (May 2010)). She is asked by officer Dale Colton to help solve a horrendous murder case at a restaurant frequented by mobsters. Zatanna informs Dale that the potential murderer was a powerful sorcerer (Brother Night, ruler of San Francisco's supernatural crime scene).
