Fred C. Scribner Jr.(1908-1994) wasan American lawyer fromMaine. Born inBath, Maine, Scribner grew up in Portland. His father was awealthy real-estate developer and Mason. Scribner Jr. graduated fromPortland\'sDeering High Schoolin1926,Dartmouth Collegein1930, andHarvard Law Schoolin1933. Scribner served in theEisenhower administration,rising to the position of under secretary of the United States Treasury. Healso served on theNationalSecurity Councilfrom 1959 to 1961 and was later a critic ofheightened tensions with the Soviet Union during the president of John F.Kennedy. AnOld Guard Republican, helater served as a chief strategist for Richard Nixon\'s failed presidential offerin 1960. He helped organize theKennedy-Nixon debates,which were the first in presidential history. After Nixon lost, he left federalpolitics and returned to his home state of Maine and eventually became apartner in the law firm of Pierce, Atwood, Scribner, Allen, Smith &Lancaster (now known asPierceAtwood).TheScribner family papers are held at theMaine Historical Society.
