On offer here is an ORIGINAL HANDWRITTEN LETTER / REQUEST FOR APPOINTMENT OF A 'HORATIO NEFF' TO BE CHOSEN 'MUSICK' FOR THE 23RD REGIMENT OF THE CONNECTICUT STATE MILITIA.

The letter is 7.5 x 11.75 in and although the letter is worn and professionally repaired in one section, it is in otherwise very good condition.

The letter is fully handwritten by Bugbee and in it he requests that 'Horatio Neff' be granted the privledge of being chosen 'Musick' (9th Company musician) for the 23rd Regiment.

The letter text reads as follows:

Amos Bugbee - Colonel of the 23rd Regiment Connecticut Militia to Horatio Neff Greeting.

Whereas you are chosen Musick of the 9th Company in 's'd (said) regiment possessing special trust and confidence in your courage fidelity and good conduct. I do appoint and empower you to take the s'd (said) company into your care and charge as their Musick carefully and Indulgently to discharge that Office and trust and you are to observe all such orders and directions as from time to time you shall receive either from me or from other your superior officers pursuant to the trust hereby reposed in you

Amos Bugbee (red wax seal remnants)

Amos Bugbee (1782 - 1869) was born in Ashford, CT and upon his fathers death, he being the oldest inherited his father's farm. He married his first wife Mary Dunham of Mansfield in 1816. After Mary passed, he married again to Eunice Richmond of Woodstock, CT. Bugbee was a merchant, farmer, a steelyard manufacturer, a flaxseed mill and other endeavors. He was of course was in command of the local state regiment and was an imposing figure when mounted and in command of the regiment. He died in 1869 and his wife preceded him the year prior.

All in all, an interesting and historic letter in Connecticut history pertaining to a little known or discussed aspect of Connecticut Militia history.
