GORGEOUS PUNU FEMALE FIGURE w PROVENANCE. Circa 1940.

Wonderfully detailed standing PUNU female figure beautifully mounted on a black wood base. The surface is covered with raised scarification patterns outlined with white and black pigments. The elaborate thick coiffure with a rolled "braid" down the back, and curved tresses which frame the face, is black. Skin tone is a honey brown stain. The figure holds a thick wooden "pestle" in each hand. Old repair of both feet. Size: With the base 21 inches tall. Approximately 75 years old. Gabon, Africa. This piece is from the collection of Frederick Lunzer and was collected in 1948 by his cousin, Henry Morton, who lived in South Africa and travelled extensively throughout Africa.
