Some verses from the Koran suggest that the prophet of Islam rose to the sky during one night. According to later traditions he was first purified by angels who covered his face with a veil because it is not given to man to contemplate God face to face.
Then he mounted Boraq, the winged centauress who had served as a mount for the ancient prophets whose mission Mohammed abolished. Guided by Gabriel and surrounded by other angels, he successively reached the seven heavens where he met his predecessors in prophecy: Adam, John the Baptist, Jesus, Idris, Aaron, Moses, and Abraham. At his urging and those of Moses, Allah reduced the number of prayers Muslims had to originally recite each day. Then the prophet visits heaven and hell. The legend probably received its form under the influence of the Judeo-Christian apocalypse and, for the descent into hell, under the work written in ancient Iranian. Later mystics interpreted it as the ascension of the soul freed from earthly passions. This 16th century miniature illustrates the story of Mohammed which is part of the introduction to the Treasure of Mysteries, an allegorical and oral poem by Niazarin. The same subject has frequently inspired miniaturists.
