Ruhmeshalle Hall of Fame Munchen Munich Bavaria Bronze Tray - 8.75\" x 6\"
King Ludwig I had the Hall of Fame built above the Theresienwiese \"in recognition of Bavarian merit and fame\" between 1843 and 1853. The architect Leo von Klenze designed the three-wing columned hall based on the model of ancient colossal altars. The busts of Bavarian personalities found their place in this hall , who, in the eyes of the king, had made a special contribution to their country, to science and art. The Hall of Fame, which was badly damaged during the Second World War, was rebuilt between 1965 and 1972. In 1966, the Council of Ministers of the Free State of Bavaria decided not only to use the Hall of Fame as museum, but also to continue to honor personalities from Bavaria who have rendered outstanding services to the people and state by displaying their busts. Since the restoration of the Hall of Fame so came to the surviving 67 busts from the 19th century , 25 new ones added. Since the year 2000, there have also been two women among them for the first time: the writer Lena Christ and the actress Clara Ziegler.
The bronze casting of the Bavaria was considered a technical masterpiece at the time. The bronze figure of Bavaria in front of the temple of honor was created based on a model by the sculptor Ludwig Schwanthaler. The statue was intended as a personification of the state of Bavaria. In 1850 the casting of the 1,560 hundredweight bronze was completed. Ferdinand von Miller, the head of the royal ore foundry at the time, won the unqualified admiration of his contemporaries for this. The colossi and cult images of antiquity provided inspiration for the conception of this monumental statue. However, the sculptor Schwanthaler gave the figure unmistakably old Germanic traits through the robes with a simple dress and bearskin. The Bavaria, the first colossal sculpture of modern times, stands on a base of 8.92 meters height and measures a total of 18.52 meters from the foot to the oak wreath held aloft. The Bavaria is the only walkable large bronze in Germany. In its cavity you can climb up a steep spiral staircase to a viewing platform in your head. There are two benches that can seat six people. Through several small openings you have a beautiful view of the Oktoberfest, which takes place every year at the foot of the Bavaria. The Ruhmeshalle (literally \"hall of fame\") is a Doric colonnade with a main range and two wings, designed by Leo von Klenze for Ludwig I of Bavaria. It is situated on an ancient ledge above the Theresienwiese in Munich and was built as part of a complex which also includes the Bavariapark and the Bavaria statue. It is built of Kelheim limestone and is 68 metres long and 32 metres deep.
With the construction and exhibition of busts of important people from Bavaria, including the Palatinate, Franconia and Swabia, King Ludwig intended to create a hall of fame that honors laudable and distinguished people of his kingdom, as he did also in the Walhalla memorial for all of Germany.
