1842 Autograph Letter Signed – Evelyn Philip Shirley (1812–1882), FSA Genealogist, MP, antiquary; author of the Annals of the Shirley Family Addressed to Rev. Thomas Streatfeild (1777–1848), FSA, Kent antiquary

A fine mid‑Victorian antiquarian letter written from 20 Belgrave Square, dated 20 May 1842, in which Evelyn Philip Shirley announces the completion of his Annals of the Shirley Family and informs fellow antiquary Rev. Thomas Streatfeild that he has inserted his name into a presentation copy. Shirley asks by what conveyance he may send the volume — a classic gesture of scholarly courtesy between two Fellows of the Society of Antiquaries.

Evelyn Philip Shirley (Jan 1812 – Sep 1882), was a British politician, antiquary and genealogist.

PROVENANCE:

One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil.

Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
