Seubert and Warner was one of Syracuse\'s leading cigar manufacturers during the 1870s, operating out of a purpose-built Italianate commercial building on West Fayette Street designed by architect Charles E. Colton in 1875 — a building that still stands today.
Justin Seubert emigrated from Germany as a teenager, already trained as a cigar maker, and launched his Syracuse business in 1866 with just two employees. The partnership with Warner produced fine cigars and dealt wholesale in tobaccos and snuff. After the Warner partnership dissolved, Seubert continued under his own name and eventually employed more than 200 workers, making him one of the city\'s major manufacturers. The first edition of the Syracuse Herald was printed in the Seubert-Warner Building in 1877.
This card was sent by traveling agent J.S. Keeler, who mailed it from Elmira while working a sales route through the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes. He was headed to Romulus in Seneca County about six days later, requesting the recipient hold their tobacco order for his visit. The use of \"segars\" rather than \"cigars\" was standard period spelling and a point of pride among manufacturers who associated the term with premium, handmade products.
A drummer\'s advance-notice card from one of Syracuse\'s most significant cigar firms, mailed during America\'s Centennial summer from a traveling agent\'s route through upstate New York.
