The 1904 presidential campaign of Alton B. Parker and Henry G. Davis was the Democratic Party\'s attempt to reclaim the White House after two terms of Republican rule under President Theodore Roosevelt. Parker, a respected New York judge, was chosen as a compromise candidate at the Democratic National Convention, appealing to the party\'s conservative wing. His running mate, Henry G. Davis, a wealthy former U.S. senator from West Virginia, was selected primarily for his ability to fund the campaign rather than for ideological reasons. The campaign struggled against Roosevelt’s immense popularity, his reputation as a reformer, and the nation\'s general economic prosperity. Unlike Roosevelt’s energetic and engaging campaign, Parker’s approach was restrained, largely confined to formal statements issued from his home in Esopus, New York. With little enthusiasm from voters and limited public visibility, the Democratic ticket was decisively defeated in the general election, with Roosevelt securing a landslide victory of over 336 electoral votes to Parker’s 140. The campaign is remembered more for its lack of impact than for any defining policy stance, as Parker failed to inspire a compelling alternative to Roosevelt’s progressive momentum.
