Today we are pleased to offer Parts Price List for the Dodge Brothers Motor Car, the stated Second Edition, effective June 1, 1915, issued by Dodge Brothers of Detroit, Michigan. This period factory parts catalog is bound in gray-brown printed wrappers with a dark cloth spine strip, a double-rule cover border, and the distinctive Dodge Brothers lettering. The terminal printer’s device identifies the Cargill Peninsular Company of Detroit.
The catalog combines alphabetical and group indexes with detailed parts-and-price tables and numerous black-and-white component layouts. Coverage extends from the frame, springs, wheels, and steering mechanism through the engine, cooling system, fuel equipment, exhaust, ignition, lubrication, clutch, transmission, rear axle, and brakes. Body fittings, hood, fenders, running boards, windshields, touring-car top equipment, tools, and electrical apparatus receive their own sections. Particularly useful named equipment includes the Stewart Model 25 carburetor, Eisemann Type G-4 magneto, North East starter generator, and Willard 12-volt storage battery.
This June 1915 issue belongs to the first full calendar year of Dodge automobile production under the brothers’ own name. John and Horace Dodge had supplied major automobile manufacturers with mechanical components before introducing their own car; the first Dodge vehicle left the plant on November 14, 1914. Issued only months afterward, this catalog documents the actual components and replacement-parts organization supporting the new Dodge Brothers motor car, rather than merely presenting the finished automobile in sales illustrations.
The factory’s ordering system is recorded in considerable detail. Tables pair telegraph code words with part numbers, quantities used, descriptions, and dollar prices. Preliminary instructions supersede earlier parts books and specifically prohibit use of the old blue-covered books’ telegraph codes. Dealers serving destinations west of the Missouri River were instructed to charge ten percent above list prices to cover higher transportation costs. The foreword also stresses supplying the car number because continuing manufacturing changes could affect the correct replacement part.
The wrappers have substantial evidence of shop handling, including ingrained surface soiling, dark smears and streaks, scattered spots, uneven discoloration, and a conspicuous circular ring mark near the bottom of the front cover. There are surface scuffs, creases, rubbed edges, worn and softened corners, small chips and nicks along the upper edge, and a short lower-edge tear with a projecting paper fragment. The cloth spine strip is rubbed and frayed at its ends, with additional wear along the wrapper folds. The plain rear wrapper has mottled dark staining and handling marks. Both wrappers remain attached, and the cover title and edition statement remain readable.
The leaves are age-toned, with yellowing and browning strongest around the margins, scattered foxing, handling smudges, and moisture-related staining. The title leaf and terminal verso have more pronounced discoloration and tide marks, while several upper margins carry concentrated dark brown spots. Additional wear includes small marginal nicks, corner creases, a folded upper corner on the electrical-equipment illustration, and slight waviness to the paper. The metal binding fasteners are darkened, with localized rust staining at the center fold; the text block remains held together. There is a slight musty odor from shop use and early exposure to moisture. The clearly printed component layouts make a bully reference.
