Cincinnati, Ohio: Crosley Field. June 13, 1970.
Offered is an original archive of22 vintage photographsdocumenting the Cincinnati Summer Pop Festival held at Crosley Field on June 13, 1970.
The archive consists of14 original black-and-white photographs and 8 original color photographs (3.5”x5”, glossy), all taken by me while attending the festival as a teenager. At the time, I was an active member of my high school's photography club. The photographs were professionally developed frommy original negativesshortly after the event and have remained together ever since.
The sequence begins with a photograph taken on the morning of June 13 following the overnight encampment in a nearby Cincinnati park where hundreds of concertgoers—including myself and a friend—camped before the festival. The remaining photographs chronicle the day from arrival outside Crosley Field through the performances and crowd activity inside the stadium.
The festival featured an exceptional lineup that includedAlice Cooper, Grand Funk Railroad, Traffic, Mountain, the Stooges featuring Iggy Pop, Ten Years After, Brownsville Station, Glass Harp, and other performers. The event later became the subject of a television documentary and remains best remembered forIggy Pop's legendary onstage peanut butter performance, one of the defining moments in early rock history.
Rather than isolated concert snapshots, these photographs form a chronological visual record of the festival experience—from the campground and entrance queues to the audience, performers, security, and the atmosphere surrounding one of the Midwest's most memorable rock festivals of the1970s.
Subjects documented include:
• Overnight campground before the festival
• Festivalgoers on the morning of June 13
• Long entrance lines outside Crosley Field
• Audience portraits and candid scenes
• Stage performances
• Security personnel and police activity
• Crowd movement near the stage
• Wide views of the audience and festival grounds
