About This Specimen:
This is a brilliant, 30-gram glassy Topaz crystal from the highly sought-after Byrd Collection. Sourced from the historic Apex Mine in the Missouri Ozarks, this piece is a fantastic representation of the locale's rare greisen mineralization. Unlike the massive topaz more commonly found intergrown with quartz at this site, this piece shows off excellent, distinct crystalline features. Under good lighting, you can easily observe the textbook parallel striations across the faces, sharp basal cleavage planes, and beautiful internal rainbow refractions playing just beneath the surface. It features a touch of natural, rusty iron-oxide staining that highlights the crystal's structure and gives it that authentic, hard-rock mining character.
The Geological History (The Apex Mine):
Topaz from the Midwest is a true geological rarity. Over 1.4 billion years ago, the St. Francois Mountains were formed through intense Precambrian volcanic activity. Deep underground, superheated, volatile-rich magmatic fluids pushed through the granite. These fluids were heavily loaded with fluorine, which chemically altered the surrounding rock (creating a "greisen" deposit) and allowed for the crystallization of true topaz alongside metallic ores like galena, silver, and chalcopyrite. The Apex Mine was part of the late 19th-century pioneer mining boom that chased these veins. Today, the mines are closed and strictly off-limits, making verified old-collection pieces like this highly prized by regional mineral collectors.
