Antique Wedgwood Jasperware Portrait Medallion of Warren Hastings, c.1787

Exceptional antique Wedgwood pale blue Jasperware portrait medallion depicting Warren Hastings (1732–1818), the first Governor-General of Bengal and one of the most significant British historical figures of the 18th century.

The oval medallion features a finely modeled white relief portrait on a pale blue Jasperware ground, showing Hastings in contemporary 18th-century dress with characteristic curled side hair.

The reverse is impressed “WEDGWOOD” and bears the incised/impressed identification “Warren Hastings.”

The portrait corresponds to the historic Warren Hastings model associated with John Flaxman, produced by Wedgwood during the late 18th century. The model is documented in major museum collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the National Portrait Gallery.

Dating

Attributed date: circa 1785–1790, most likely circa 1787.

The attribution is based on the combination of the historic Warren Hastings model, pale blue Jasperware body, applied white relief, impressed subject name and impressed WEDGWOOD mark.

The absence of an “ENGLAND” country-of-origin mark is also consistent with an earlier production period, although the impressed mark alone cannot establish an exact year.
