EUC RARE VTG 1963 US Air Force K-2B Flight Suit Indian Orange S Cotton Astronaut For Sale

This authentic U.S. Air Force K-2B flight suit was manufactured by Covington Industries Inc. and dated Nov 13, 1963. The color is Indian Orange (also referred to as International Orange). Lightweight cotton twill. Fun fact, it is the exact flight suit astronaut Tony Nelson wore in I Dream of Jeannie (see photos.)
The bright orange was used primarily for high visibility to aid in search and rescue operations, These suits were commonly issued to fighter interceptor squadrons (units flying over friendly or Arctic territory where visibility was critical for recovery if downed.) Strategic Reconnaissance (Pilots of high-altitude aircraft like the SR-71 Blackbird) and NASA/test pilots. (Used during early spaceflight training - including Buzz Aldrin- and by test pilots to ensure they could be easily spotted after a bailout.
By the mid 60s, these orange suits were largely replaced by sage green versions for combat roles in Vietnam, as pilots needed to remain camouflaged in the jungle if shot down. .
