DESCRIPTIONThis is a genuine 1928 air mail cover carrying the ink signature of pioneering aviator May Haizlip, one of the defining names of Golden Age women's air racing.Franked with the Scott C11 5-cent Beacon on the Rocky Mountains air mail stamp and postmarked Chicago, Illinois, December 5, 1928, 6:30 PM, the cover was mailed during the run of the International Aeronautical Exposition, held December 1-9, 1928 under the Aeronautical Chamber of Commerce of America, where 53 manufacturers exhibited 79 aircraft.The cover carries the printed blue cachet for that exposition, showing a rocket-nosed aircraft trailing exhaust over twin globes, and is addressed to Howard M. Weaver of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania.
May Haizlip earned her commercial pilot's license in 1928ecoming only the second woman in the United States to do so.
She went on to compete in the first Women's Air Derby in 1929, set a world speed record for women that stood for seven years starting in 1932, and finished as the second-highest money winner, man or woman, at the 1931 National Air Races. This cover captures her signature from right around the time she was breaking into national aviation circles.
