May Ritchie Deschamps Corn Husk Dolls Pair Appalachian Folk Art Witch Halloween For Sale

Wonderful pair of vintage handmade Appalachian corn-husk folk art dolls, including one original tagged example by noted Appalachian craft artist May Ritchie Deschamps.

The first doll is an elegantly dressed woman carrying a tiny woven basket and retains her original paper tag reading:

“Hand Made by May Ritchie Deschamps”

The second is a fantastic Halloween witch with tall black witch hat, broom, reddish-brown hair and a tiny jack-o’-lantern pumpkin in her hands.

Both figures are beautifully constructed from natural corn husks and other traditional materials with wonderful handmade detail.

May Ritchie Deschamps (1896–1982) was a recognized Appalachian folk artist and important figure in the development of traditional corn-husk crafts. Her work is documented by Western Carolina University, and an example of her work is held in the Smithsonian National Museum of American History collection.

The witch is extremely similar in construction, materials and style to the tagged Deschamps doll and is being sold together with it; however, because the witch does not have a visible maker tag, its maker is not guaranteed.
