Civil War General James A Garfield gave distinguished service in the Civil War and postwar became active in the Republican Party. In 1880 Garfield was put forward as a Reform Candidate, and readily won the Presidential Election . People had great hopes this honorable man would take on corruption and establish an honorable presidency. Garfield effectively went to work, destroying the grip of Roscoe Conkling and Chester Arthur on the nation's main source of revenue, the US Customs Office. Only a few months after his Inauguration Garfield was murdered by the Assassin Charles Guiteau, a delusional and disappointed office seeker. The Nation was appalled by his murder and deeply grieved his loss. An Original Mourning Proclamation issued by the Governor of the State of Iowa September 19th, 1881 announcing the death that day of the President after his lengthy struggle to recover, and sharing with the people of Iowa their sorrow at the loss of this soldier patriot. This large 16 x 10.5" Broadside Proclamation is issued by Iowa Governor John H. Gear, at Des Moines, Iowa. Folds, minor age stains, Overall VG Condition.
