General Electric U50s were eight-axle, 5,000 hp Diesel-electric
road-switchers built in 1963. They were twin-engined locomotives,
combining two 2,500 hp Diesel engines riding on four two-axle
trucks (B+B–B+B), grouped in pairs linked by span bolsters salvaged
from scrapped UP turbine locos. The 83' 6.5" U50 was effectively
two U25Bs on a single frame; each of its Diesel engines powered
only two of its trucks. Union Pacific owned 23 of the beasts.
Twenty UP U50s were withdrawn from service in 1973 –1974 and
traded-in to GE for U30Cs. The last three U50s units remained on the
roster until April 1977. Sadly, all were sold for scrap. Andy’s superbly
detailed painting is a beauty, underscoring his fascination with unique
high-horsepower Diesel designs.
