Description and Condition

Vintage Cairns & Brother White Fire Chief Helmet Size 6 3/4. As found. The helmet still has both the sewn and paper labels. Top section of the shell appears to be made of a composite/fiber glass material while the bottom section of the shell has a leather surface texture as shown. Helmet measures approximately 14.25\" long x 11.25\" wide x 7.25\" tall and weighs about 2 pounds.This vintage Cairns & Brother Fire Chief helmet also features a fascinating, period-correct modification. The bottom of the leather shield originally read \'NPFD\' (likely New Providence Fire Department). At some point during its service life, the \'F\' was hand modified with whiteout and red pigment to form a \'C\', reading \'NPCD\'. Given the 1960s/70s era of the helmet, this was almost certainly repurposed for a local Civil Defense auxiliary unit. A wonderful piece of Cold War era crossover history.
In great pre-owned condition with overall surface wear consistent with age. Please note that one of the metal rivets/nails attaching the front leather shield to the helmet feels loose. There is also some surface crazing to the paint (on top) and to the leather like surface (on bottom section), which is consistent with age. I\'m not an expert so please review all images included as this is the exact item you will bereceiving.
