A VINTAGE BATES NEWPORT EAGLE BEDSPREAD. RED AND BEIGE ON ONE SIDE AND BEIGE AND RED ON THE OTHER. HISTORIC NEWPORT REPRODUCTION. BATES BEDSPREAD WAS STARTED IN 1850 AND AFTER OVER 100 YEARS DUE TO THEIR OWN SUCCESS CLOSED ITS DOORS. THE SPREADS WERE SO WELL MADE TO LAST,AND SO THEY DID. PEOPLE THAT BOUGHT THEM YEARS AGO JUST PASSED THEM DOWN SO NO NEED TO BUY ANOTHER. BATES FACTORY WAS IN WATERVILLE MAINE.NOW USED AS A WAREHOUSE. THIS SPREAD WEIGHS 8 LBS

Key Characteristics;

The Technique: These textiles were crafted using a Jacquard loom, which utilized a punched-card system to weave intricate, curvilinear geometric and figural designs directly into the fabric.

The Design: It features a vibrant red-and-white (or cream) palette with a repeating floral medallion layout, a detailed eagle/floral border motif along the bottom edge, and a knotted fringe trim.

The Material: They were traditionally hand-loomed using a combination of homespun cotton and dyed wool threads, making them reversible and durable
