c.1970's Vintage Ameyaltepec Nahua Indigenous Mexican Amate Painting, Guerrero State of Mexico - Jesus Christ. The painting on amate paper features artwork depicting Holy Week or Semana Santa, with villagers following the Jesus Christ figure in the center, holding various instruments and candles, image surrounded by a floral and plant border. Beautiful Unsigned work. Amate comes from the word "amatl" from the Nahuatl language, which means "paper." It is a type of paper made from the pulp of the fig and mulberry trees. Amate paintings usually depict scenes of everyday life of villagers, such as harvests, fiestas, weddings, religious customs and wildlife. Dimensions: 9"H x 25.5"W.
