A matched pair of Yoruba Ere Ibeji (twin figures) from Nigeria, West Africa — one male, one female — each approximately 11–12 inches tall. Hand-carved hardwood with a rich camwood-pigmented patina throughout, consistent with authentic ritual use.
Ere Ibeji figures are among the most important objects in Yoruba spiritual practice. When one or both twins die, the mother commissions a carved figure to house the deceased twin's spirit, and maintains it through regular ritual care — bathing, oiling, and offering food. The characteristic reddish-brown camwood patina and worn, rubbed surfaces on these figures are the direct result of this sustained handling over many years or decades.
Style and proportions suggest the Oyo or Iseyin sub-region of Yorubaland. Mid-20th century or earlier. No beads, shells, or textile attachments present — figures are in their natural carved state.
