[Francois-Dominique] Toussaint Louverture [L'Ouverture] (c. 1743-1803) was the formidable leader ofthe Haitian Revolution and a towering figure of the 18th century. Born into slavery, he rose to lead the only successful slaverevolt in modern history, which established the first free Black republic. Hewas instrumental in the fight to end slavery in the French colony ofSaint-Domingue (present-day Haiti), a key outcome of the revolution.

A brilliantmilitary strategist who fought against French, Spanish, and British forces, hewas also a skilled politician who created a de facto autonomous colony andestablished a constitution that abolished slavery. Louverture's achievements inspired oppressed people across the Americasand established him as a symbol of resistance against colonialism and slavery.

Often hailed as the "Black Spartacus", he earned areputation as a brilliant warrior-statesman whose intellect and leadership drewcomparisons to the great revolutionary heroes of the modern era.
