Antique World War I Allied Nations Cotton Parade Flag c.1917–1918 — Original Staff

Offered is a scarce World War I-era Allied Nations parade flag dating to approximately 1917–1918. This original cotton flag measures approximately 16.5" x 10" and remains mounted on its original wooden staff with finial, a feature that is increasingly difficult to find.

The flag features the national flags of the major Allied powers of the First World War, including:

United States

Great (white-blue-red tricolor)

This example is especially interesting because it represents the Allied nations of World War I, not World War II. The identifying feature is the Russian flag: this flag displays the traditional white-blue-red Russian tricolor, which was used by Russia during World War I. During World War II, Russia was represented by the Soviet Union, whose flag was the red banner with the hammer and sickle. The use of the older Russian tricolor strongly supports a WWI-era date of manufacture, circa 1917–1918.

These flags were produced for patriotic displays, parades, schools, civic events, and wartime fundraising efforts during the First World War. Unlike large national flags, small presentation and parade flags like this were often handled, carried, displayed outdoors, and discarded after events.
