Overview

A rare piece of automotive and Third Reich postal history: an original commemorative postal hand stamp (Sonderstempel) created for the historic laying of the foundation stone (Grundsteinlegung) of the main Volkswagen factory on May 26, 1938.

Used by the German Reichspost in mobile post offices on-site at Fallersleben/Vorsfelde (later named Wolfsburg), this stamp was applied to mail and commemorative postcards sent during the ceremony led by Ferdinand Porsche and Nazi party officials to announce the KdF-Wagen (the prototype for the classic Volkswagen Beetle).
